Just wanted to some behind the scene pictures during an assignment for State Welcoming Ceremony of Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan to Malaysia on March 12, 2013. The ceremony at Dataran Putra, outside Prime Minister office only happens in less than thirty minutes but normally photojournalist will arrived one hour earlier before the functions begin, because we need to get some clearance from the Prime Minister’s security department, get access pass before we move into our designated position.

Most photojournalist will carry two sets of camera body equipped with either wide angle lens such as 24-70mm, 70-200mm and most importantly super telephoto lens like 300 mm and 400 mm. Super telephoto lens is a must in this situation because our designated area, or camera position is quite far away from the subject in focus, no matter how large our camera megapixel is, there is no way it can get the same quality  as a tight shot that we can get with our super telephoto lens (300 mm – 400 mm), I mean if we use 70-200mm lens with 24 megapixels camera and then cropped the picture to get a tight shot that resemble the same as a tighter shot by 400 mm lens, the image quality will dropped and the depth of field is not the same as what you get with 400 mm lens.

So there is a reason why we need to carry that heavy duty lens, it is not to show to the world that “we are professional”, we carry it because we know what’s the best equipment for the given assignment and we wanted to tell the visual story to the world the best possible way that we can do.

Before I finish this article, think about this, if you have a full frame DSLR with 100 megapixel, shooting a bird  with 24-70mm lens, and your friend standing next to you shooting the same bird that are far away with full frame DSLR but only with 50 megapixel camera attached with 600 mm lens and the bird appear to fill the entire frame, while on the other hand, you  only manage to get a very small image of the bird, not even half the frame, and if you crop the image later in Photoshop to enlarge it to the same size as 600 mm look, do you think the image quality will be the same? If you think the quality will be same, then when a new compact camera came into market equipped with 200 megapixel sensor, do you think 600 mm lens will become obsolete?
