I just wanted to share with you some basic information regarding some documents that you must have before you start your trekking in Nepal. All trekker’s are  required to obtained Trekking Management Information System TIMS card, you can get it through your trekking agency or just do it yourself like what we do here. If you wanted to it by yourself, just head to Nepal Tourist Service Center at Bhrikuti Mandap in Kathmandu. Better use taxi or take a bus to get here, we try to walk from Thamel to the Tourist Service Center and in the end we get lost, how do we get here, we asked one of the policeman that we found on the road and he suggested to us to take a bus and get down at Ratna Park and just a minutes walk we can see the building.

TIMS card will cost you USD20 or Rs1610 per person. The Tourist Service Center in Kathmandu is open from 10AM-1PM / 2PM-4PM (Sunday-Friday), yes it is open on SUNDAY and closed on Saturday. You will get the TIMS Card on the same day, on the spot.

Then you will also need to pay for a National Park & Conservation fees, if you plan to trek Annapurna, you will need to pay for Rs2000 for Annapurna Conservation Area Project fees or ACAP Permit. For Langtang you need to pay Rs 3000 (effective since June 22, 2012) to get your National Park Permit. If you don’t want to get all the touble getting your documents, you can arrange it with your trekking agency to handle it. For six of us, we did it ourselves. We did not use trekking agency for this trip.

There you have it, you need to have those two important documents before you start trekking. Trekking permits and TIMS card are not the same things, for Langtang, Everest Region (Not Climbing Mount Everest) and Annapurna regions, you don’t need a trekking permits but for this area (listed below), you need to pay for trekking permits :

  • Kanchenjunga & Lower Dolpo  – USD$10 per week
  • Upper Mustang & Upper Dolpo – USD$500 for 10 days & USD$50 per day, if you trek more than 10 days.
  • Nar-Phu – USD$90 per week Sep – Nov | USD$75 per week Dec-Aug
  • Manaslu – USD$70 for 1st week | USD$10 per day Sep – Nov | USD50 per week | USD$7 per day Dec- Aug
  • Humla – USD$50 for 1st week | Then USD$10 per day
  • Tsum Valley USD$35 per week

You need to always check back about this information prior to your visit, because maybe they have increased the fees or you need some kind of additional documents, hopefully with this some basic informations will get you a head start to start your adventure in Himalaya.
