The most efficient and cheap way to get from point A to B in Istanbul by public transportation is undoubtedly by metro, tram, funicular and/or ferry. These means of public transportation are very efficient, quick and punctual. Not in the least because they don’t suffer from Istanbul’s constantly clogged streets.
They are very frequent, meaning that you don’t to wait long to get a tram or metro. Most of the trams or metro here have a fixed fees, whether you wanted to travel from point A to B or from point A to Z (last destination), the fare is the same, in 2013 the fixed fare is TL3 per person.

You can visit most of interesting location in Istanbul by using trams, but the famous area in Istanbul is around Sultanahmet, where Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Museum is located. All of them are within close walking distance.
If you fancy a night life, then take the tram to Kabatas, the last tram station and from there take a funicular to Taksim. From Taksim you can explore the area either by walking or take a the famous old classic red tram to visit the area which is very busy with people from all around the world.
