We were hit hard by snowstorm during our arrival at Uludag after about one hour journey by a taxi from our hotel in Bursa. I really wish before our departure that we will get a nice weather, a dry snowy scene so that I can take a beautiful picture of my family against the white snow but instead, we were greeted by a heavy snowstorm.

Anyway I think, it is a blessing in disguise, despite the heavy snowstorm, I’m grateful actually, grateful that my family have the experience watching the snow flakes falling from the sky. It is truly a magical experience despite the uneasiness and even though I didn’t manage to take a lot of pictures due to the snowstorm, I’m quite satisfied that I manage to get here with my family.

Children’s Photography | Once Upon a Time at Kuala Penyu Sabah

I still have a lot of photographs taken during Eid ul-Fitr celebration at my father-in-law house in Kuala Penyu Sabah yet to be shared here on my blog. Actually once I got back here in Kuala Lumpur, I was very busy with my work especially a week before Malaysia celebrate his independence day, which falls on 31st August 2012.

Anyway, this photograph were taken at my father-in-law house and he own that sampan, the colour is bright yellow, it was brand new, handmade by none other than my father-in-law himself. Less than an hour after this photograph were taken, the sampan being transferred to nearby river just in front of my father-in-law house.

To be honest with you, there are plenty of photo opportunity here but due to short of time and we are busy entertaining people visiting our house, I don’t have much time for photo session with my family and this one were taken with just a compact camera and not a DSLR. It was acceptable for a small size print but the quality begin to drop at large size but nevertheless it’s the moment that matters and this beautiful moment of my children’s having their best time inside their grandfather sampan is something to be cherished for years to come.

Finally after so much procrastination, my Black and White Photoshop Editing eBook is almost done, this is just a few sample of the pages from total of 55 pages or maybe more, because this is not final, I mean, there will be some minor changes or maybe I will add another chapters before I will officially released this eBook.

This is my forth eBook and by far is among the hardest for me to produced, simply because there are dozens of way on how you can convert your photograph into Black and White using Photoshop. Some of you may prefer using Lightroom or any third party software or black and white plugs-in for Photoshop but for this eBook, I will show you how to get it done from ACR Adobe Camera RAW to finalising it in Photoshop.

No matter which ways we are doing it, the final result will always be in Black and White but for this eBook I also add few variation, among others is Sepia Tone, Quadtone, how to get classic colors, yes “Classic Colors” or Classic Color Tones with a combination of black and white tones and color image.

Some ways will work better than the other, but I just wanted to give you the real secret of great black and white pictures. It comes from your original photograph. If you know which type of picture that will shine through black and white, then the process of editing will be easier, as for me, normally I will convert my picture into black and white if the result is better than in colors and if colors send a strong message than black and white, I will stick with colors, just because I know few ways of converting my picture into black and white, doesn’t mean that every picture will look great in black and white. It doesn’t work that way.

Anyway, I will let you know when this eBook is ready to be released because in the next few days, I will be celebrating Eid Ul-Fitr with my family in Sabah for a week from 18 August to 25th August, I will be offline for most of the times and hopefully by the end of this month, you can have it. Travel Photography | Children of Balat | Istanbul Turkey

Balat is the traditional Jewish quarter in the Fatih district of Istanbul. It is located on the European side of Istanbul, in the old city on the historic peninsula, on the western bank of the Golden Horn. (Another Istanbul neighborhood deeply associated with Jewish settlement is Kuzguncuk on the Asian shore.)

Today Balat is a working-class district on the shores of the Golden Horn. Though it once had as many as nineteen synagogues, only two of importance remain, the famous Ahrida, and the neighboring Yanbol. The site of a Jewish school is close by, and Or Ahayim Jewish Hospital is several hundred meters to the northwest, within walking distance. Remember to make arrangements in advance with the Chief Rabbinate to visit these sites.

Now Balat receiving the attention and support of UNESCO and The European Union. Rehabilitation of Fener and Balat Districts Programme is a joint programme of the European Union and Fatih Municipality. The Programme is being implemented by Fatih Municipality, supported by a Technical Assistance Team, commissioned in accordance with a service agreement signed with a consortium led by Foment Ciutat Vella SA, a development company 50% owned by the City of Barcelona. The other members of the consortium are IMC Consulting (United Kingdom), GRET (France) and Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work (FSWW) (Turkey).

Balat is the host of many ruined houses which remain from very old times. All ruined houses in the neighborhood are important owing to their history, because lots of them are from Byzantine and Ottoman times. UNESCO is very successful in the restoration of the ruined houses in Balat. They prepare good projects and after their approval they start to work without harming their original version.

However they never demolished the bay of the house and never built a new roof. They just repaired it by using natural equipment to convey it to the next generation. They never wanted to add new things to this house, because they know that under this condition it would lose its historical value. They worked for a very old door and they found suitable hinges for it. They never used ‘pvc window’ instead of an old one. That’s why they worked painstakingly and deftly. Therefore in Balat there were many ruined houses that were restored by UNESCO. After restoration people live there.

For those of you who like street photography and human interest, I highly recommended you to visit Balat and Fener, peoples here are very friendy from my personal experience. Another thing is that this place is less crowded with tourist, so you can take your time to get to know the people living here and I was quite surprise while shooting here when I heard someone yelling, “are you from Malaysia?” It looks like they know that we are form Malaysia, maybe they are guessing but they get it right.

To those of you who have plenty of time to explore this hidden part of Istanbul, I highly recommended you to start from Eyup, and from there you can take your time visiting this beautiful place.
