“Making a more balanced, visually pleasing image is an aesthetic goal of dodging and burning, but there’s another, more compelling one. It’s all about leading the eye of your viewer. Photography is communication, but a kind where the photographer (the messenger) isn’t always around when the message gets interpreted by the viewer. Dodging and burning are the accents you put into the language of your photography, the stress you put on some words of your photographic sentence rather than on others.”

– Piet Van Den Eynde –

Dodging and burning is not something new in photography, photographers have long using this technique in traditional darkroom to add depth and contrast to their images especially for black and white photography but in those days it was more like trial and error because we really can’t see the result immediately, only by experience we will be able to know how long we need to dodge and burn certain area in the photograph under the enlarger in darkroom.

Now we can use Photoshop, Lightroom and other third party software or plug-ins to get the same result as what we are dong in the traditional darkroom. Actually there are more ways to get good editing, it is not necessarily using dodge and burn but it was among the most widely see technique in term of drawing the eye to to the main subject or to what rally matters in the photograph, so in this latest eBook from Craft And Vision Piet Van Den Eynde demonstrate many ways doing dodge and burn technique for best result. For those of you who are not familiar with this technique I highly recommended this eBook to you.

Personally for me, editing is an art in itself, depending on the genre of the photography that you chose, to those of you who are into Photojournalism, this type of editing might not suitable for you but for casual shooters and those of you who wanted to get the best from their photographs, having a great photography editing is an extra asset that will make you stand out from the rest of your friends, it is better to be multi skilled than just one skilled in this digital age.
